Late afternoon sunlight illuminates Ryaln Whaley with mom Jen, and dad Nate as they look over process of recycling the incoming material from a catwalk at the Great Lakes Recycling facility March 30. Members of the Dearborn Sustainability Coalition visited the facility in Huron Township for a first-hand view of the process that handles recycled materials from Dearborn’s big green curbside bins. The very labor-intensive process at the state of the art facility is called a single stream recycling because residents don’t need to separate the recyclables themselves. Incoming materials are delivered to the tipping floor, with a capacity of 8,000 tons, and then fed through a series of conveyors tended by fast moving workers. At the end the separated products are compressed into large bales and then sold to companies who use them to make new products.

While people of high school age are planning their proms, with limos and dressy outfits, people at the other end of the age scale are having an equally good time even though they like music from past decades and ride wheelchairs instead of stretch limos. The annual Senior Citizen Prom was held at Heartland Nursing Center in Dearborn Heights March 25 and it was a dressy affair with professional entertainment by Damon Shaw, formerly of the Platters. Resident Virginia Premo and staff member Nancy Bergeron admire Damon Shaw as he sings during the Senior Citizen Prom at Heartland Nursing Center in Dearborn Heights.
