Dearborn Historical Museum Chief Curator Kirt Gross eyeballs the placement of a sculpture titled “Phoenix” into a temporary landing spot on the now empty lot at Michigan Avenue and Brady Street in May. The modern and sometimes disconcerting sculptures that appear and then move around Dearborn are part of the Midwest Sculpture Initiative sponsored by the East and West Dearborn Downtown Development Authorities and the Dearborn Community Fund. The Art in Public Places project has about a dozen pieces mounted around the city and in May organizers took advantage of the empty lot that was the former home of the Quality Inn at Michigan Avenue and Brady Street to show the art.

Nadine Khalil stands with a photograph she made of her mother that is part of the In the Heart of America exhibit that opened at the Arab American National Museum Saturday. As the country approaches the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this fall, a class of middle school journalism students from McCollough-Unis School in Dearborn shared the stories of their lives and their community in the presentation. The students’ photos and stories were created during the 2010-2011 school year, when the Asian American Journalists Association sponsored a project called The Living Textbook with a class of seventh graders.
