With flags and banners about 300 demonstrators marked the 63rd anniversary of what Palestinians call Al Nakba, or the catastrophe, Sunday at Dearborn City Hall. The commemoration marks the time when thousands of Palestinians were forced from their towns and homes during the formation of the state of Israel in 1948.

Mary Bracey and “Sarabi” lead a line of dog walkers and walking dogs through west Dearborn Saturday for the Mutt Strut that draws hundreds of pet lovers to Ford Field for the annual fundraiser for the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

Students from Dearborn High School Student Video Program make a movie every year. This year’s project, likely their largest ever, is "Saint's Cove" and is a murder mystery involving a fishing camp. The crew of actors, directors, camera operators, lighting and sound techs with dozens of extras filled Dylan’s Restaurant in Grosse Point Woods in March to shoot scenes from the movie that will open at the Michael A. Guido Theater May 25 and 26.

Sally Petrella, with Friends of the Rouge, and her assistant Mat Halliday paddle back to a dock across from Fordson Island in the Rouge River May 11 after sampling invertebrates from the water. It is one of the first steps in the rehabilitation of the channel and island and removal of more than a dozen abandoned wrecked boats. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative awarded $150,000 grant to the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority for the Fordson Island Oxbow Restoration and Debris Removal Program. The project was one of eight selected nationwide out of 50 applicants, and was the only project selected in the Great Lakes. Fordson Island was created in 1917 by the dredging and channeling of the Rouge River to the Ford Rouge Plant.

Fordson High School student Fatima Hawli creates jewelry May 11 during the Youth in Arts Festival at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. Hundreds of talented Dearborn students from kindergarten through high school performed, displayed and demonstrated their arts at the first-ever city-wide event. The program was designed to reinforce the importance of the arts in students’ lives.

Writer/Script Supervisor Kevin Conner, Advisor Kurt Doelle and Director Evan Foret work out a video sequence while recording the WDHS production of “Saint’s Cove” at Dylan’s Restaurant in Grosse Point Woods in March. Students from Dearborn High School Student Video Program make a movie every year. This year’s project, likely their largest ever, is a horror movie about a group of friends whose Thanksgiving vacation goes terribly wrong. They very quickly discover the malicious plans that have been put into play in a small fishing village. It will premiere at 6 PM May 25th and 26th at the Michael A. Guido Theater.

Riot police were deployed April 29 to separate counter-demonstrators from Quran-burning Florida Pastor Terry Jones and supporters during a protest at city hall. What had been an otherwise peaceful demonstration turned disorderly about an hour in when Jones left the lectern and started heading toward the opposing crowd. At least a hundred counter-demonstrators rushed across the five lanes of Michigan Avenue with some throwing shoes and water bottles at Jones. Waving shoes from a passing vehicle on Michigan Avenue counter protestors register their anger at him while he speaks at city hall and other demonstrators drown him out with their loud chants.

After approaching barricades against the advice of police, Pastor Terry Jones and his supporters taunt counterdemonstrators across Michigan Avenue Friday just before the opposition crashed through their barricades in an attempt to attack those on the city hall front lawn.
