Sally Petrella, with Friends of the Rouge, and Megan Bahorski, Environmental Consultant with AKT Contractors, look over a wrecked houseboat Thursday after it was pulled from the riverbank onto Fordson Island by an excavator in the effort to clear wrecks from the Rouge River. Urged on by Friends of the Rouge, the wrecked boats that littered the waterway were mostly removed last week. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative awarded $150,000 grant to the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority for the Fordson Island Oxbow Restoration and Debris Removal Program. The project was one of eight selected nationwide out of 50 applicants, and was the only project selected in the Great Lakes. Fordson Island was created in 1917 by the dredging and channeling of the Rouge River to the Ford Rouge Plant. Environmentalists hope to restore the island and channel to a nature habitat.
